Fourth of July at the Zoo

For Fourth of July this year, we decided to go to the zoo. Neither John or I are huge fans of big crowds or waiting around. So instead of going to the big festivals we decided to go to the Zoo. We figured it wouldn't be crowded and we were right! It was nice being able to take our time and see all the animals. The weather was perfect (we even had to wear jeans!) so a lot of the animals were pretty active too. We ended up getting a zoo membership because the zoo is so close, we figured we'd want to go back a couple times each year!

Love this polar bear shot I got!

The orangutan is my favorite zoo animal. And the giraffes.

The cheetahs were right next to the glass, it was so cool!

All in all, we had a great day celebrating the fourth in our new home, just the four of us. We also grilled steaks for dinner that night and then of course listened to all the fireworks going off. The girls were sleepy so they went to bed and slept through all the noise, but it wasn't an exaggeration when my friends said it sounds like a war zone. Obviously, I have never been in a war zone, but this had to sound close. There is no law against any kinds of fireworks here so people were launching the big huge ones that you usually only see at shows. The noise went on until midnight (thankfully there is a law that they have to end at midnight.) It was kind of cool to be able to step out in our driveway and see all the fireworks going off around close by. But I'm already dreading New Years! (It was loud every single night for about a week before the 4th and went on until about the 6th.)

Our most memorable zoo trip was the day before Thanksgiving, a couple of years ago. It had been raining and was pretty cold, but we bundled up and were almost completely alone with the animals. It was great!!!

We have a zoo membership, too. Even though it's a little more than an hour drive, we still find our way there every 6 weeks or so. It just makes for a great family day for us. :)
