The Not so Lonely Donkey

We were driving past a horse pasture on the way home the other day. Out in middle of the pasture all by itself was a donkey. I overheard the following conversation from the backseat:

Maddie: That donkey is so lonely.
Izzie: No, it's friends are just getting him a toy.
Maddie: Oh! That is SO nice of them!
Maddie: LOOK! There are his friends, under that tree over there!
Izzie: I know. They are building him a house so he won't get wet when it rains one day.
Maddie: They sure are nice friends.

Our girls' favorite explanation when they don't see something is that it's probably napping...or having a snack...or eating breftast/lunch/supper.  They'll say that about any neighbor dog or cat that we miss on our walks, or the horse and carriage that is not always parked downtown.  They've even said it about inanimate objects, like front porch flags that have been taken down.  I love hearing how they explain things!  :)
