Learning new things

Izzie's new talent this week has been to pick up her toys on her own. Maddie will take a toy and put in her mouth. She's starting to reach out for toys that you put in front of her. Izzie has been very vocal this week too. They both have started to a lot better at tummy time.

And an ideal night...

Wow! Last night was the best night we've had in weeks! We put the girls down after we fed and bathed them at 8pm. They actually went down without any fussing. Well, I think there was one "Paci Emergency" as we call them. Other than that, they drifted right off to sleep. I went to sleep somewhere around 10pm. The next thing I know it's FOUR AM. I got to sleep from 10pm to 4am with NO interruptions!

Now the interruption we had was Maddie waking up with another "nightmare." She's been waking up out of a dead sleep crying really loudly. She's done it a handful of times. Sometimes at night time and sometimes at naptime.
She stays asleep through the whole thing. I just go in there and pick her up to cuddle her. She immediately calms down. We don't know what they are about. We will mention on to the pediatrician at their next visit.

The ironic thing of course was at 4am with that much uninterrupted sleep, more than I've had in a long time, I was wide awake. Go figure. It took me an hour to get back to bed. Now it's 7:30 am and the girls haven't even woke up for a morning meal yet.

I think the footsies worked....

An ideal day

Today went really well. Last night was a bit rough, but not terrible. This morning the girls ate around 6am, but went back to bed for 3 more hours. I really needed those extra hours. I think I got my best sleep in the 2 hours after I put them back to sleep! They were pretty happy this morning, playing on their mats. They went down fairly easily for nap time too. This afternoon was mostly happy again, with some bumps along the way. Izzie wasn't feeling too well. They both have some bug bites that I think was itching her. I put itch cream on them after their baths. I hope it helps! I just finished up bathing them and put them down. This is the first night in weeks that I think (knock on wood) that they went straight down. At nap time I went out and bought them some footsie nightgowns. Last night every time the air conditioner came on, they woke up. They won't keep a blanket on their legs. We are hoping the footsie gowns will help this! Overall, today was fun and happy. Hopefully this ideal day, will end in an ideal night.

PS. John and I love reading all the comments that come in, so please keep 'em coming!

I need to make a revision...

In the previous post, I stated that the girls were sound asleep for nap time. That apparently was very wishful thinking. For some reason, the girls just didn't want to go down for a nap today. We finally got Maddie down, thank goodness, but Izzie just wouldn't go to sleep. She's been pretty mellow, but no sleep. Her eyes are tired, but she doesn't want to nap. I tried rocking her and singing to her. She finally took a little cat nap in her swing so hopefully that will help. I just know that nighttime is harder when they are overtired. Oh well, at least she hasn't been crying. Just the opposite, she's been very happy today. Same with Maddie.

Pool day

It was our first pool day of the summer and the girls first pool day ever! Of course, by day, I mean 20 minutes....

Neither one of them liked the bright sun, but the sun glasses mom bought for them don't fit yet. Maddie was okay with the cold water, but Izzie was very upset by it. John took Izzie in the water and she immediately started crying. By water, I mean the 2 in baby pool. I took Maddie in and when I put her feet in, she at first started crying. But then she was okay with the situation and I got her to sit in the water up to her waist. I switched babies with John and eventually got Izzie to sit up to her waist too. It was a lot of work, but it was worth it. I think overall the girls had a good experience. They are now sleeping for their nap very soundly.

Pajama day

Today I had a wonderful relaxing pajama day. It rained all afternoon and it was just perfect for staying inside and cuddling with my family. John is home from work this week on a "Stay at Home Vacation." We watched National Treasure 2. It's definitely different watching a movie with twins. Lots of pausing and breaks. Mostly they cuddled with us and watched, but there was also a "dinner" break, a play break and a walk around the living room fussy break. Somehow, we made it through the movie, which was pretty good.

What fun chaos

Well, today was my Memorial Day Bar-b-q. It was a success, I do believe. I think everyone left happy and full. John manned the grill and we had hot dogs and hamburgers. A good time was had by all, which is pretty amazing considering there was 7 infants and a 3.5 year old running around! There were 3 sets of twins, Izzie and Maddie, Zella and Lila, and Cambry and Sebastian (all around 5 mo). Plus my niece Sabrina (2mo). We actually lined them up on the couch and took a picture, which was hard considering none of them are sitting up yet! Here are some photos from the day:

A fairytale

Once upon a time in a land far far away there were two princesses. Their official princess names were Princess Madeline and Princess Isabelle, but to those that loved them, they went by Maddie and Izzie. One day, not that long ago, Maddie and Izzie traveled with the Queen, their Momma, to the land of the Quintana's House for a playdate. They had a very fun time at their friends house. But they were jealous too. Princess Cambry and Prince Sebestain had their very own thrones which they could sit and rule the castle from. Prince Sebestain and Princess Cambry even let Princess Madeline and Princess Isabelle borrow their thrones for a short time, so that they could feel the power that went with sitting up.

The princesses turned to their Momma, and said that they too, wanted a throne to call their very own. How could they be effective princesses without at throne? Their mom had said that she would never buy a throne for her princesses, but she has learned to never ever say never. So the benevolent queen talked to the king of the castle and it was decided that the princesses should get their very own throne. So, the queen scoured the countryside via an online garage sale site called and found a throne for sale that was indeed fit for a princess.

She went and bought it while the princesses were taking their daily beauty rest. When they were awaken with a kiss from the king that very afternoon, they were very excited to see their very own throne.

They lived happily ever after.
The end.

Call 1-800...

We tried calling, but no one was home!

Party at my crib 4:30am!

I know I talk about sleep a lot. Nap times, bed times, no sleep, extra sleep. I've learned sleep is a very important aspect of the first year of life. Mostly, I'd say my girls are excellent sleepers. Especially Izzie. That girl likes her sleep! She plays hard, cries hard and sleeps hard. Maddie on the otherhand, is more laid back, but she's a watcher. She loves observing her world and she doesn't want to miss even a second of it. She is a bit harder to get to go to sleep. Lately she is the first to wake up too. Maddie is also the one I find asleep on her play mat, like she was playing and she just couldn't fight it off any longer.

The last few nights Maddie has woken up early. I remember fondly about a week towards the end of April that when I put the girls down at 8pm they slept to 8am. It was so nice. When we moved them to the nursery it was 8pm to 6am. Which is not bad by any means, but still early for me. Last night Maddie woke up at 4:30. It was miserable. She wasn't hungry, she wanted to PLAY!!! Finally, after trying to get her to go back to sleep, at 5am I fed her and put her back to bed. Then of course Izzie woke up at 6:15 wanting to eat. So I fed her and I put her back to bed. Maddie was sleeping soundly, and I needed more sleep! So I did get to go back to sleep and woke up at 8:30.

I don't like feeding them separately. For one thing, it means I have to do it twice. And the other is from an efficiency stand point. Two breasts, two babies... things just work out smoothly. When I only feed one I have to decide, do I switch her around or just keep her on one side. Usually if I know I'm feeding one after the other (we are out in public and I can't tandem, for example) I just keep one baby on one side for the feeding. Last night I didn't know when Izzie would wake up. So, I had to switch Maddie around. And then the same for Izzie when she eventually woke up. On the otherhand, I do like feeding them separately. I get to spend quiet time with each girl individually. Afterwards I always snuggle them extra tight.

So, who knows, maybe sleep will never ever be the same. Maybe after the first year or so people just adjust and don't talk about it as much. For me, right now, sleep (or lack thereof) is always at the top of my mind.

Ho Hum

Not much has been going on this last week. The girls Grandma, Grandpa and Nanny are traveling to Wisconsin to visit family. Their Popo is in Houston visiting his mom. Their Nana is still in town. We went to dinner with her last night. The girls did pretty good at the restaurant. I was slightly worried because they were kinda fussy as we were getting ready to go out. Mom wanted to order a pizza instead of going out! I think I needed to get out. I've been cooped up in the house a lot lately and I'm going stir crazy. The weather is nice and I've been going on a lot of walks, but I'm getting tired of walking around the neighborhood too. With the girls, it is hard to just get out. Even though it's harder to do, it's something we just need to keep on doing or go crazy.

We are planning a Memorial Day Backyard Bar-b-q. I'm looking forward to it, but I changed my mind almost immediately after I sent out the e-vites. That's the thing, it's something I would have done before twins, so I want to do it now. But having everyone over and dealing with the girls will be challenging! I know it'll be fun, and I do love hosting parties. It's going to have to be "picnic" style since we haven't bought a table for the backyard yet. But, we'll make do! That's coming up next Monday.

Today, we tried going for a walk but it is just too windy. The girls didn't like the wind blowing that hard in their face and I don't blame them.

Good day

The time has flown by today. The girls woke up pretty early this morning so I fed them and put them back to bed. I wasn't sure if Izzie would go back down, since she was "singing" to me this morning, but I knew Maddie was still sleepy. But they both went to sleep pretty easily. That gave me time to "wake" up all the way. After they woke up, we had a fun filled morning. Both girls were just in a super duper mood. Singing and gabbering away. We went on a long walk and just played hard. I didn't expect them to want to go down for a nap until 1 or 1:30, but at 12:15 Maddie started crying because she was so sleepy. You could see it in her eyes. So I put them down. She fell asleep even before I finished swaddling her! Izzie took a bit longer, but she too fell right asleep. I got alot done around the house during nap time. They just woke up and are playing in the other room. During their nap I looked up some new songs to try out on them, so I'm off to go sing! Mom's coming over later (John has to work late tonight) and we are going to dinner and she can help me put the girls to bed if John doesn't get home in time.

Playdate at the Quintana's

We spent the day at my friend Kim's house. It was really fun seeing all the babies together. They actually did really good. At one point all the babies were fussy. Kim and I just looked at each other and yelled, "walk??" over the screaming madness. We got the girls (and one boy!) in their strollers and took a nice long walk around her neighborhood. It was nice, because the kids were all having fun and we actually got to visit! Afterwards we ate lunch at her house, fed the babies and put them to sleep. Izzie and Maddie bunked together in Cambry's bed and Cambry got to bunk in with Sebastian. Amazingly enough they all went down! We got some more visiting time in before I had to head home.

The girls Grandma and Grandpa came over for a visit and they brought dinner! Which was awesome because I had been gone all day and hadn't even thought of dinner yet. They wanted to see the girls before they head to Wisconsin for a week and half vacation with John's Grandma.

The day of no sleep

The girls did not want to go to sleep today. No naps, no cat naps and now no bedtime. Actually, I think they are finally asleep for bedtime, but it took a long time to get them down. I take that back, Maddie just started crying... again. John's upstairs rocking her.

This morning they were very happy. They were playing and having a grand old time. I packed them up and took them to mom's house. We were going to go grab lunch and maybe hit one fabric store. (Still looking for curtain fabric.) Anyway, the girls started crying in the restaurant. I managed to eat my meal while holding Izzie, but mom ended up taking hers to go. We had hoped they would take a nap in their carseats, but no go. So we headed back to mom's house. I fed them and tried to put them down for a nap. No go. They were crying their heads off. I tried feeding them again, one to just soothe them and two to see if maybe they weren't full. Then I tried to get them to sleep again. No go. We ended up holding them both. They finally nodded off for a short while in our arms. Now at bedtime, they are just overtired. Izzie is sound asleep but Maddie is fighting it. I feel like I spent the whole day trying to get the girls to go to sleep. I know for one I'm sure exhausted!

Holding pattern

The girls seem to be in a holding pattern lately. For awhile there it seemed like every day, or at least every other day they were doing something new. I guess right now, they are just perfecting the skills they've already picked up before they move on to something new. Maddie is very close to rolling over. I wouldn't be surprised if she does it today. A while ago she went from tummy to back, but hasn't done it since. Now she goes from back to tummy, almost! She just can't seem to get that last shoulder square to the floor or mattress. Izzie has been working on her hand-to-mouth coordination. She likes bringing toys and her hand to her mouth. She likes to reach out for a rattle that you hold in front of her. They are both very vocal. They love to jabber away. It is extremely cute. I love watching their expressions while they try to talk. When I went to the park with them yesterday, I saw these other cute little girls. One was 18months old and so adorable. She was toddling around like she owned the place. It'll be so fun when my girls get that age. But I am enjoying this sweet non-mobile baby stage too!

Yesterday, Maddie was very needy. She wanted to be held all day long. Maybe her tummy wasn't feeling well or something. It was just out of character for her. Hopefully today she feels better. Izzie got this new toy that when she kicks is starts singing and says "hello, baby!" She loves it. I actually got some video of her doing it.

Walking in our jeep

Earlier when the girls and I went out walking, it was a bit chilly outside. So I put some pants on them, and then ended up putting hats on too. I haven't put hats on them since they were preemies! They looked so cute! See if you can tell them apart....

One year ago today I got my BFP. That stands for Big Fat Positive in the online world of pregnancy chat rooms. John and I had been trying to get pregnant for a while and on May 15 of last year I took a HPT (home pregnancy test!) and got a BFP after several months of BFN's. The line was so faint that John had me retake it 3 days later. We were so excited. Those three days were very very long, but when I retook the test, sure enough two lines means pregnant! We told immediate family right away, but waited awhile before we told most people that I was pregnant. It seems impossible that it was only a year ago that we found out we were expecting. We didn't find out we were having twins until July 19th when I was 12.5 weeks pregnant. My girls are going to be 5 months old in 5 days. Time really does go by quickly this first year.

Blissfully boring

The last few days have been blissfully boring. Last week was pretty hectic for the girls and I so we needed a boring week to just get back into our routine. They are such happy babies. Both Maddie and Izzie are really starting to love to play with their toys. Izzie will reach out and grab a rattle that you hold in front of her. Maddie wants to, but can't quite get her hand to go where she wants it yet. On the otherhand, Maddie is SO close to rolling over. Izzie could absolutely care less about rolling over. She's got other things more interesting in her mind. She loves to kick, but I knew that in the womb. Izzie was on my left side and Maddie was on my right. Towards the end of my pregnancy, I actually went in for a baby stress test to see if baby "A" was okay. It was just Maddie being laid back like usual. Compared to Izzie who was kicking me like crazy, I didn't know what to think! It sure is fun to watch them grow up. Sometimes it seems like they do something new each and every day.

This and that

Last night there were a lot of ups and downs. Maddie was hard to get to sleep. I think they were over tired. I went over to Mom's house last night for a few hours and the girls just got too tired. They've had a busy last few days. Today I am going to try and keep it pretty low key. Which shouldn't be hard. The weather is cooperating. It's a drizzly gloomy day out there. We won't be able to go on our morning walk that's for sure. So last night, we finally got both girls asleep. John and I were going to watch a tv show, but then we looked at each other and said, nope, let's go to sleep too! We were tired. Then during the night both girls kept losing pacifiers and they let us know. I think John and I have learned how to sleep walk into the nursery. Luckily as soon as they have their paci, they turn their heads and drift right back to sleep.

Today, I'm going to try and get the Summer edition of the Woodbridge Newsletter knocked out. I started it yesterday, but while the girls were napping, instead of working on it, I laid in bed and watched tv. My back was hurting again yesterday and I didn't even want to sit up at my computer. It is feeling much better today thanks to Mom's hot tub and massage chair.

Here are some more cute pictures from Mother's Day:

My first Mother's Day

It's my very first Mother's Day! John got me a "Spa Day" at Firewheel Day Spa. I can't wait to use it. It's a manicure/pedicure and an HOUR long massage. I'm going to be jello by the end of that. This morning we are going to the Country Club to eat breakfast to celebrate the Moms on John's side of the family.

My Mom is in Houston celebrating with Chris's Mom. She was in College Station yesterday to celebrate with Mema. I love you Momma! Rhonda and I are going to dinner with Mom some time this week.

Picture crazy

Some favorite photos that haven't made it to the blog yet.

Maddie and Izzie waking up. I had to take a picture of those cute, cute, cute faces!

I know one thing, my girls cannot complain that I didn't take enough pictures of them when they were babies. The other day I looked to see how many files I had in my picture folder. Since the girls were born I've taken close to 1,400 pictures of them. Not all of them are great. I tend to take doubles and triples to make sure I get a clear shot.

Tick tock, Maddie is a clock

Last night, Maddie was quite the little wiggler in the crib! I went to check on them close to three in the morning and her head had moved from the 12 o'clock position to the 3 o'clock position. Then later, close to 6 am, yep, sure enough her head was in the 6 o'clock position. Somehow, she had managed to turn upside down during the night. Sometime through the night she broke free of the swaddle, but stayed asleep! Izzie on the other hand stayed peacefully unaware of her sisters antics.

Today we are headed over to the girls Grandma's house for the day. It'd be fun if Julie could bring Sammy and Sabrina over too. It's fun seeing all the cousins together.

Later... What a chaotic day! It was fun though. At one point we had John's Grandma, Sammy, Sabrina and Julie, plus me and my girls all over at Jackie and Tom's house. It was a house full of people. I wanted to get a picture of the girls and Sabrina, but all of the babies were never awake at the same time! Izzie and Maddie had a hard time going down for a nap. So when they took some little catnaps, we didn't want to mess with them. At one point everyone got fussy, so Jackie and I pulled out some strollers and went for a walk with Maddie, Izzie, Sabrina and Sammy. And, like we didn't have enough kids, the neighbors kid joined in. We looked like quite a group. This couple of joggers stopped to help us get the stroller over the curb at one point. I wonder what they were thinking!

To swaddle or not?

The girls are getting better at sleeping in the nursery. Or maybe it's me that is getting better. I don't think they had a problem with the idea. I still get up about one extra time a night to check on them. I'll get over that with time. Right now, our biggest night time issue is the swaddling. Maddie has been fighting the swaddling really bad. So I thought, maybe it's time to go unswaddled! So I tried that last night. She scooted around the bed making little grunting noises and waving her arms around for an hour and half. Finally I just swaddled her. By this time she was really tired and was out in less than 10 minutes. So, I'm not sure what I'll do. Maybe I'll try again tonight. Maybe she isn't ready to be unswaddled. It's hard to say for sure. Izzie on the other hand, doesn't mind being swaddled at first, but through the night she tends to "break free" and wake herself up. It's an issue that we will keep working.

Anytime you get a new haircut, it takes a few days to "learn" how to fix it. This morning I woke up to a mass of curls piled on my head. I tried straightening the bangs like Alyson did, but I think I need a bit more practice. Here's my hair...the day after.
